is cbd oil good for your skin

The ECS cannot always completely regulate all bodily functions or produce the exact right level of cannabinoids itself. This is why introducing phytocannabinoids from cannabis can improve the body’s health in a number of ways.

Encourages Sebum Production

CBD oil also boasts notable skin-normalizing, soothing, and calming benefits and can help minimize skin sensitivity issues, including reactivity and redness. These benefits can help anyone’s skin cope with the rigors of exposure to environmental stressors.

What Does CBD in Skincare Do?

The question is, how could CBD help reduce or mitigate the impacts these factors play when it comes to signs of aging?

In broad terms, we are just beginning to learn how CBD and skin care work together. It works in the body and in topical CBD products.

After age 20 or so, the skin becomes less elastic and firm as the body produces about 1 percent less collagen each year and also reduces elastin production. The skin becomes thinner and more delicate, and its capacity to heal itself lessens. These problems get worse as less oil is produced by the oil glands beneath the skin’s outer layer, and the end result of the combined changes can be larger pores, fine lines, sagging skin, and wrinkles—all traits that can make the skin appear even older than it really is.

Cannabidiol or CBD is a component that occurs naturally in cannabis. Unlike the tetrahydrocannabinol or THC in cannabis, CBD won’t get you high, but it does boast a range of medicinal uses. In fact, more and more consumers are now using CBD to treat all kinds of maladies, from insomnia and nausea to muscle pain and depression.

“Some studies have shown that topical CBD can also help reduce oil production in addition to reducing inflammation in the skin, which are two main players in the generation of acne,” Dr. Jennifer Vickers, a dermatologist with Sanova Dermatology in Texas, tells TZR; adding that the anti-inflammatory effects can help calm skin and reduce redness, too. “It also has antioxidant and regenerative qualities to help offset damage from the sun, pollution, and aging.” Basically, it seems everyone’s complexion can stand to benefit from an application of cannabidiol.

One CBD brand is on a mission to put a dent in those numbers. “As U.S. companies, led by mainly white men, get billion-dollar valuations on the stock market, and our fellow community members simultaneously sit in jail for simple possession, we feel we have a moral obligation to bring awareness and justice to the inherent racism and oppression that still exists in our criminal justice system,” Kati Holland, the founder and CEO of Not Pot, tells TZR. To this point, Not Pot pays for one person’s bail per month via The Bail Project, using proceeds from sales of its CBD gummies. “We believe that paying someone’s bail is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty, and we’re committed to doing our part,” she says.

The Basics

With this in mind, experts suggest choosing CBD skincare products that boast “full spectrum CBD” or “whole plant CBD” on the label. Without either of those, you probably won’t see the results you want. “My advice to customers looking to try CBD skincare is to look at the labels like you would something you eat,” Scott Campbell, co-founder of Beboe Therapies (the first CBD skincare line born out of an actual cannabis company), tells TZR. “Look for full spectrum CBD, the right amount of potency, and if you can, a certificate of authenticity, like we are giving our customers.”

Despite the awareness, research, and even the legalization of CBD, there is still a lot of work to be done to move the industry forward. Today, CBD is technically classified as a Schedule 1 drug, as reported by Forbes, since it’s a cannabis byproduct — and as a result, CBD startups are labeled “high risk” by the U.S. Department of Justice. This makes it really hard for new CBD companies to obtain business bank accounts (it’s even harder for minority founders); and when they do, the associated fees and charges are typically much higher than average. A source tells TZR that this Schedule 1 classification gives banks the power to shut down CBD sellers’ sites and freeze their accounts, prompting many CBD brands to “bank hop” between financial institutions.

It can’t be ignored that the people cashing in on the controversy are largely white, largely male, and largely not doing anything to actually change the perception of marijuana usage, which is inextricably tied to race. As reported by The Stranger, President Richard Nixon’s War on Drugs in the 1960s specifically targeted communities of color. John Ehrlichman, Nixon’s chief domestic advisor, later claimed to Harper’s magazine: “The Nixon White House . had two enemies: The antiwar left and Black people. We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

The most important factor to consider, however, is the quality of the product you’re purchasing. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, over 60% of online CBD products are mislabeled. So, “make sure you trust the brand and have confidence that the product is safe and that it contains exactly what the label claims it contains,” says Donnelly. “It’s best to always opt for products that have been tested in a third-party lab,” suggests Pekar. Here are a few other things to keep in mind when buying a CBD product.

This Manuka honey and CBD-infused eye balm does everything from plumping and brightening the delicate under-eye skin to shielding it from environmental stressors. It also contains Vitamin C-rich grapefruit extract to help even out skin tone and revitalize tired skin.

“Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the compounds found in hemp, including trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum CBD oil, on the other hand, contains a range of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids derived from hemp, but no THC,” explains Ed Donnelly, CBD expert and founder of AmourCBD.

Meanwhile, “CBD isolate is the purest version of CBD. It doesn’t contain any other compounds that you find in a hemp plant,” tells Pekar. “This form of CBD oil is best for facial skin as it’s pure, doesn’t clog pores and is packed with skin-rejuvenating antioxidants,” adds the aesthetician.

Research shows that CBD may be effective in alleviating anxiety, chronic inflammation and pain, insomnia and some rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Moreover, a long-term study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that CBD may help prevent cognitive decline. In addition, according to a review published in the Neurotherapeutics journal, CBD may also be effective in treating substance use disorder.
