Once the beeswax and coconut oils are thoroughly mixed, remove from heat and transfer into containers for your infused salve.
While your cannabis is in the oven, place your coconut and olive oil in the saucepan or double boiler over low heat and stir continuously.
Keep in mind that your lotion will still be fairly thick, so we don’t recommend trying to put it in a lotion pump.
And there you have it!
Remove your decarboxylated cannabis from the oven and mix it into the coconut oil. Maintain a low heat and continue stirring the cannabis and oil mixture for 20 to 25 minutes.
If you’re not sure what containers to use, many containers used for cannabis flower can also be used for topicals and lotions. Our personal favorite is the classic 4 oz. glass canning jar, easily bought in bulk and useful for a number of purposes.
In order to make your salve into an infused lotion or cream, add:
On the other hand, I have also seen companies offering creams, salves, or body butters with 300mg-500mg per ounce and have heard of other topical products with even higher amounts.
So, let’s get to formulating a salve! We’ll aim for around 300mg per ounce of salve. That’s a higher amount than many of the topical products out there, but less than some others. It’s a nice middle ground that makes for a good starting point. You can adjust it as needed to suit your needs.
I’m going to begin by showing you how to make a salve because it’s a very simple product to make that only uses oils and waxes. A good guideline for making a salve is to use roughly 4 parts oil to one part beeswax (or candelilla wax as a vegan alternative), by weight. That would make a somewhat hard salve. If you prefer a softer salve, you can soften it slightly by adding just a tad more oil, getting it closer to a 5:1 ratio.
Where to find a high-quality CBD oil?
So, for now, at least, the state laws seem to trump the Federal laws. The DEA admits to being more focused on opiate drugs and their spokesperson basically stated that nobody is going to have issues buying and using CBD oil. In the end, the true legality of CBD in the US in quite ambiguous, perhaps intentionally.
Purium CBD oils have 1500mg in a 30ml bottle. That means that each ml of their CBD oil had has 50mg CBD.
You can also play with using a combination of waxes to get the consistency and texture of your choice.
As many people make CBD salves in the hopes of reducing muscle and joint aches and pains, it only makes sense to add essential oils that may also have anti-inflammatory or pain-reducing effects. Some great essential oils to consider are camphor essential oil and/or turmeric essential oil. Peppermint essential oil also has a cooling effect that may help soothe sore muscles.
Lather up! Apply a thin, even layer to the affected area. You should start to feel the results within 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the severity of your issue and strength of your salve. Repeat several times per day as needed.
When stored in ideal cool and dark conditions, homemade cannabis salve should last up to a year. The potency will only slightly decrease during this time. I try to use clean hands when I dig into my salve jars, to avoid introducing any contamination that could make it potentially mold or spoil faster. You could also use a salve spoon.
Salves also typically contain waxes or butters to bind the ingredients and make them semi-solid at room temperature. Beeswax is a popular option because it is readily available, easy to work with (especially when purchased in pastilles), and creates perfectly smooth results. See the ingredient list below for recommended vegan substitutions.
Will this make me smell like weed?
Grind or tear up the cannabis into fairly small pieces. Spread it evenly on a baking sheet, and heat it in the oven on 250°F for 25-30 minutes. Easy, right?
On the other hand, if you just made your cannabis oil and it is still liquified, you can do this step straight in a pot on the stove – keeping the heat as low as possible once the cannabis coconut oil is added.
When cannabis is added to salve as an ingredient… voila! You’ve got yourself a cannabis salve. The most common way to add cannabis to a salve recipe is to create a cannabis-infused oil first, and then combine the oil with the other salve ingredients.
In either a pot or double-boiler, add ⅓ cup of beeswax. Heat until it is completely melted. Now turn down the heat to low. Next, stir in 1.5 cups of strained cannabis coconut oil and ⅓ cup olive oil. Now is the time to add the optional vitamin E plus a few drops of optional essential oils as well. Stir until everything looks completely combined. Once it is, quickly remove the liquid salve from the heat and transfer it into your storage containers of choice.
