Edibles vs. Tinctures: Which Is Better For Me?

Gummies and Oil and Pre-Rolls, Oh My! Plus, A Cannabinoid Cheat Sheet.

What Are Edibles?

The real question is: what aren’t edibles? If we’re being technical, edibles are food products that have been infused with hemp and/or marijuana and can include baked goods, candies, gummies, chocolates, lozenges and beverages. They can be homemade (typically infused with hemp or marijuana butter or oil that is then baked, cooked or spread directly onto food) or commercially prepared by brands or dispensaries. Even though a good toke is still the most popular (and efficient) way to feel all the benefits of the plant, eating edibles like CBD gummies are quickly becoming a popular way to enjoy hemp and/or marijuana. That’s good. The bad news is that edibles have a reputation of being a little… intense. But with any flower product, we recommend thoroughly vetting brands and companies to ensure they’re transparent and testing their products using accredited third part vendors. That way you don’t have to worry about sketchy doses or sneaky THC percentages.

What Are Tinctures?

Technically, Tinctures are edibles (just like any form of ingestible product like cannabis-infused beverages, food or candies). Tinctures have been around for almost as long as humans have and are one of the main pillars of traditional herbal medicine. In a nutshell, tinctures, including hemp and cannabis tinctures, are highly concentrated extracts of the medicinal components of plants. These extracts are usually made by soaking the bark, berries, leaves, roots, or flowers (dried or fresh) of plants in alcohol, vinegar or oil. While the word “tincture” traditionally refers to a formula where alcohol, vinegar or oil is the primary solvent, it can also refer to the larger category of concentrated liquid products derived from cannabis. Dad Grass Classic Formula CBD Tinctures are fully oil based, so we use the word “tincture” in the latter sense.

Tinctures are made all sorts of ways, but at Dad Grass, our Classic Formula CBD Tinctures are made from the same CBD-rich 100% Organic Dad Gras s hemp flower you’ll find in our joints . The recipe is pretty simple. Just carefully extracted, full spectrum hemp oil blended with organic MCT oil. When taken daily, there are dozens of CBD and CBG oil benefits that have been known to help people achieve and maintain a state of reliable chill, while keeping their minds sharp and focused for whatever comes their way. And whether they’re used once in a while or as a daily ritual, high quality full spectrum CBD tinctures like ours have proven effective in reducing anxiety, stress, pain and inflammation. There’s also a growing body of scientific research that indicates they can help alleviate certain symptoms associated with chronic illnesses.

Oral v. Sublingual Consumption. Which Is Better?

There are almost endless ways to enjoy cannabis products. Identifying the best way for you to consume CBG, CBD, CBN or THC depends on your specific recreational or medical needs and wants.

  • Smoking (Joints & Pre-Rolls) – Smoking and vaping are still the most popular ways to consume cannabis. If you’re looking for fast effects (and a soothing ritual), taking a puff is the best way to go if you want to feel something in as little as five to ten minutes. But if you don’t want to inhale smoke directly into your lungs, or desire a more discreet option, edibles and tinctures are both great options.
  • Oral Consumption (Gummies, Chocolates, etc.) – Listen, we all know how to eat a piece of candy. When you ingest cannabis as an edible, the active compounds in hemp and/or marijuana must travel through the body’s digestive system to then be metabolized and released in the bloodstream. That means that the full effects of the plant take longer to kick-in. When ingested, edibles like gummies can have a bioavailability between 4 to 20% due to the metabolizing process in the digestive tract. A big reason why edibles sometimes get a bad reputation of being too intense has less to do with the dose and more to do with the patience of the user. If you want immediate results, stick to joints and tinctures. But if you’re fine waiting a half hour to feel all those amazing benefits, and have the time to feel those effects for longer, then gummies could be perfect for you
  • Sublingual Consumption (Tinctures) – The best way to experience the full benefits of Cannabis tincture is to take it sublingually to ensure you’re getting as much of the good stuff as possible. Sublingual consumption, on the other hand, places the therapeutic compounds directly into the bloodstream without having to go through the digestive tract and the liver. We recommend placing your desired dosage of your favorite tincture under your tongue and waiting about 30 seconds before swallowing (if it helps, sing the chorus of Bye, Bye Miss American Pie in your head while you wait). The arterial blood supply under your tongue needs time to absorb the CBD, CBG, CBN or THC to ensure your endocannabinoid system receives all the benefits of hemp. When taken sublingually, tinctures can have a bioavailability between 40 to 50%.
What Does “Bioavailability” Mean and Why Does It Matter?

“Bioavailability” is the name of the game when it comes to hemp. Bioavailability (bi·o·a·vail·a·bil·i·ty /ˌbīōˌəvāləˈbilədē/) is “the proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced to to body and so is able to have an active effect.” Woof. Let’s break that down.

When it comes to CBD, CBG, CBN (or THC), bioavailability refers to the percentage of these beloved cannabinoids that are actually absorbed by the body. A lot of brands will claim that their products contain tons of cannabinoids. And a lot of people think that the more milligrams they consume, the better they’ll feel. But what really matters is how much actually makes it into your bloodstream. Unless your products are formulated to optimize for bioavailability, your tincture (or gummy, drink, etc) will fall short of delivering you the effects you expect because a good amount of the cannabinoids you’re expecting will end up going down the toilet. Literally.

Are There Side Effects Of Ingesting Hemp Oil or Edibles?

According to Open Access Government , “the general consensus among professionals and even the World Health Organization, is that even in extremely large doses, all three main forms of CBD, CBG and CBN (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate) are likely to cause extreme drowsiness, lethargy, upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea and other unpleasant, disorienting side effects, not death.” So there you have it, you can’t overdose on CBD oil, tinctures, gummies or joints. What about a hemp + marijuana (THC) overdose? Still no. Even full-spectrum CBD or marijuana with high amounts of THC “will not cause a person to overdose in the traditional sense,” says WebMD.

How Will I Know If A Tincture or Edible Is Any Good?

In today’s world of online CBD shopping and boutique smoke shops, we’re all a little spoiled for choice. To keep things simple, we’re laying out a few things to keep in mind as you embark on your journey to find the perfect product (or are a toking veteran looking to audit your routine).

First things first, find a company and brand that you trust. When it comes to buying tinctures or edibles, it’s important to know how a company sources, treats and delivers the flower in your hemp, because once it’s distilled down, everything that went into the flower will be concentrated in your oil or gummy (or brownie). Make sure the brand that you’re purchasing from consistently tests their hemp and/or marijuana thoroughly in partnership with accredited third-party labs. The word “transparency” gets thrown around a lot these days, but it really is important. You don’t want any secrets when it comes to the products you’re putting into your body. It’s also important to find a company you trust if your goal is to consume only legal, hemp-based or low THC products.

Once you find a company that you can trust, one that is transparent and has proof of third-party testing and also passes tests for pesticides, heavy metals, mold or microbes. Reputable and transparent manufacturers and brands will provide certificates of analysis ( COAs ) for all of their products. These will include an analysis of any additional cannabinoids, terpenes and additional compounds found in your product. It’s also important to consider CBD potency, price and customer reviews.

We’ve Talked Form. What About Function?

CBD, CBG and CBN are three of over one hundred separate cannabinoids found within hemp and marijuana. Cannabinoids are identified chemicals that have the potential to interact with a series of receptors in your body known as the endocannabinoid system .

Cannabidiol (CBD)

This is probably the most popular cannabinoid (besides our beloved THC). In recent years, CBD has exploded in the health and wellness categories and is used in everything from skincare and haircare to ingestibles and smokables.

CBD is so beloved because of its ability to reduce stress and inflammation as well as pain and inflammation when consumed and applied as a balm or solvent.

Cannabigerol (CBG)

While not as studied as CBD, CBG is the third most-prevalent cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. In its acid form within the plant, it is the parent molecule of both CBD and THC (which is why scientists refer to it as the “mother of all cannabinoids” and we call it Mom Grass) . Within the cannabis plant, CBG can be thought of as a waystation. It’s a building block, or base, of other cannabinoids. Cannabinoids like CBD and THC are derived from CBG. This nature of CBG makes it hard to capture for your toking pleasure without specially growing hemp plants bred to have higher concentrations of it. Helpfully, our growers have figured it out.

CBG has been shown to ease anxiety, depression, pain and inflammation. Friends and family tell us that Mom Grass makes them feel grounded, creative and tuned in and are great for starting off the day and unwinding in the evening.

Cannabinol (CBN)

The least studied cannabinoid of our big three, CBN is showing promising results in recent studies. Very small research has suggested that CBN has the potential to reduce pain and act as a sedative, which is why it’s been known to be so great for promoting sleep. CBN actually comes from the breakdown of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. CBN is mildly psychoactive (as are CBD and CBG), but doesn’t produce a high like THC as it is non-intoxicating.

CBN has been shown to be useful for promoting sleep and for easing pain and inflammation.

No doubt that you’ve heard of CBD by now, as it’s everywhere! You can get it in your coffee or from your local gift shop. I first heard about CBD years ago from a friend and remember feeling really unsure about the idea of it. Is it like legalized weed? (It’s not). I’ve learned so much about it since then!

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It’s not psychoactive, meaning unlike THC, another compound from the cannabis plant, you don’t feel any “high” from taking the product. It’s gained a lot of attention in the natural health world for it’s potential use in easing pain and reducing anxiety, among other potential benefits.

I’ve been using CBD products off and on for a long time now- maybe 1-2 years – and listed it as one of four things helping me through tough times. I tried it initially out of curiosity and to see if I could feel a difference in my stress levels when taking it just occasionally. I tried many different brands but for months now I’ve been brand loyal to Joy Organics because I trust their commitment to quality and consistency… and the simple fact that I can actually feel a difference with their products.

My favorite products are their CBD gummies , their CBD soft gels , and their CBD bath bombs .

I usually take it late afternoon/evening on days when I just feel on edge, overly emotional, or stressed. I generally take 20 mg (2 soft gels or 2 gummies). And yes, I can feel a physical difference. There is obviously no high, but it makes me feel more peaceful and relaxed, like I would after a long yoga class or a sauna session.

I have gotten questions from people who say they can’t tell a difference when taking, and my two responses are always: what brand are you taking (is it high quality?) and how much are you taking?

Why you might not “feel anything” when taking CBD:

  • Your CBD isn’t from a quality source.
  • You aren’t taking a high enough dose (this is actually a common mistake, especially since we only absorb about 4-20% of cannabinoids we ingest ).
  • You need a different delivery system (read more below about benefits of each).
  • It might just not work for you ( apparently about 20% of Americans have a genetic mutation that makes them less sensitive to it ).

Let’s chat delivery systems. You can find CBD in every kind of form now.

CBD Tinctures vs CBD softgels vs CBD gummies

Tinctures

  • Tincture products are fast-acting and easy to take. Tinctures are a simple introduction to the world of CBD — you simply select your favorite flavor and take by mouth as desired.
  • As with all Joy Organic’s high-quality products, they extract any trace amounts of THC from their tinctures before they sell them to you. This means you can enjoy all of the benefits of CBD without worrying about feeling a THC-induced high as a side effect. Their third-party lab tests ensure that there is no detectable level of THC in their tinctures.
  • Because they use broad spectrum hemp oil, you also get the benefits of the naturally occurring components of the hemp plant working together with the CBD. This is what’s known as the entourage effect. When you take CBD from Joy Organics, you are truly receiving all of the benefits the hemp plant has to offer.
  • There are flavor options. If you’re a citrus fan, try the Lemon or Orange flavors. The Tranquil Mint is perfect for those looking for a relaxing, refreshing experience from their tincture. Or, if you’d rather experience the authentic flavor of hemp extract, the natural tincture is simply made up of extra-virgin olive oil and CBD.
  • With the tinctures, you’re able to have more control over the amount of CBD you ingest with the option to adjust as necessary for your individual needs.
  • Tinctures are super easy to add into drinks or foods!

Softgel

  • Oil and water don’t exactly mix. The human body is mostly made of water. That’s why when you take a regular CBD product, you don’t absorb much of it. Joy Organics softgel formula utilizes nanoemulsion technology that decreases the particle size, transforming their premium hemp extract into a consistency more easily absorbed by the body. This increased bioavailability in the softgel means that you’ll see similar benefits that you would with a regular CBD product but with a smaller serving size.
  • Joy Organics CBD Softgels are made with broad spectrum oil, packed with naturally occurring phytonutrients. The combined benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes from the hemp plant make their CBD softgels truly synergistic. This process is known as the entourage effect, which just means you are getting the best of what the hemp plant has to offer when you trust Joy Organics for your CBD needs.
  • Softgels give you predictable results in an easy-to-swallow format. Because of their water-soluble nanoemulsion technology, the bioavailability is much higher than an oil-based CBD product. If you are looking for fast and effective CBD results for any time of the day, their 10 or 25mg softgels are the perfect product for you!

Gummies

  • CBD Gummies make it extremely easy to get a perfectly-measured serving size of CBD. Taking a tincture can be slightly more difficult because it requires you to measure your own serving, usually by filling a dropper. CBD edibles are different. They often come in a perfectly measured serving, which lets you know exactly how much CBD you’re taking. When eating a 10mg CBD Gummy, you know you’re consuming exactly 10mg.
  • CBD Gummies offer long-lasting effects. Although CBD Gummies might take longer to kick in, the effects tend to last longer than other methods. CBD Gummies can be great for those interested in experiencing benefits that extend over a period of several hours.
  • Few products are more discreet than a CBD Gummies. If you’re someone who values their privacy, CBD edibles make it easy to get a regular serving of CBD wherever you might be without anyone knowing the difference.

I’d say the biggest thing when choosing an ingestible would be based on preference. What is ‘easiest’ for you to ingest!

I have friends that take CBD morning and evening every day. I know people that give it to their pets or their teenagers. Personally I take it on what I call an “as needed” basis and can say that over the course of this incredibly hard year, it has helped me.

If you have any questions about CBD or my personal experience with it, don’t hesitate to ask. I know how hard it was for me to find reliable information when I had questions, so I hope this has been helpful to you!

CBD Tinctures vs CBD Edibles: What’s right for you?

Given these times, as a result of COVID-19, we are all spending a lot more time at home and while that might be challenging, we’ve seen a surge in interest in people creating health and wellness regimens that support a self-care lifestyle:

There are apps for meditation and calm, adjustments to diet, increased interest in herbal remedies, and many products that make false promises they aid in reducing your anxiety.

CBD Infusion

Cannabidiol or CBD for short (much easier to say, right?) is the ingredient trend that is now being infused into many health and beauty products in addition to their sale as stand-alone products.

CBD may have many health and wellness benefits for those interested in natural alternatives to addressing some of their wellness needs. CBD is not addictive and unlike its cousin, THC (AKA marijuana, the cannabis plant), it is not psychoactive, so you won’t get “high” from it. CBD is one of the many active compounds found in the hemp plant, the cannabis plant’s conservative cousin, which naturally contains extremely low levels of THC, (less than 0.3%).

It has been adapted to be used in many different ways we see today by CBD companies online, and by many retail giants with private label CBD products. With so many options in this cluttered marketplace, it can be hard to decide which one may be right for you.

Make Sure CBD is Right for You

First and foremost, it’s important to consult with your health care practitioner to ensure that CBD is right for you.

It’s also essential to choose wisely when selecting the CBD product, you intend to purchase. If the CBD company you are considering promises to treat or cure any of your medical challenges, they are lying, and you should move on, as companies that do so are in violation of current federal regulations and should be suspect in all areas of their product and business practices. If they don’t clearly label the ingredients in the product, keep searching. If they don’t have third-party lab results from an independent third-party lab, don’t buy them.

And look for companies that provide “full panel” lab reports for safety (absence of pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and other biologic contaminants), and not just a CBD potency test.

Use High-Quality CBD

Once you’ve found a trusted company, with products grown in the US, that controls the process from the seed in the ground to the product in your hands, has reviews from a trusted outside source that is verified, has lab reports that can be accessed by their site or via the QR code on the label, and believes in their products enough to offer you a 30-day risk-free guarantee, you are set.

The next hurdle is deciding which consumption method you prefer. When choosing between CBD tinctures and CBD gummies, there are some factors to think about because they are not the same. Understanding the differences between them may help you choose what’s best for you.

The Mystery of CBD

CBD is a mystery compound that is enlightening us daily. While it has been around for centuries and used in cultures across the globe for a host of natural remedies, we are just beginning to scratch the surface of what seems to be infinite possibilities of its powers for humans and pets today.

CBD was discovered as a component compound in the hemp and marijuana plant in the early 1990s and eventually patented 10 years later by the US government for its potential medicinal purposes. Scientists are conducting studies to assess its ability to aid in treating many challenges humans and pets have today, and the pace of such studies has accelerated in recent years given the protection afforded researchers under the Farm Bills of 2014 and 2018.

Trusted CBD Source

At High Falls Hemp NY, we evangelize truth and disclosure about CBD and its potential benefits. It’s important to recognize that it may provide some with the results they desire as a natural alternative to over the counter and prescription medications, but not for all.

While there are some studies that have confirmed its ability to support wellness, nothing is concrete, and we look forward to the many studies on the horizon.

Anecdotally, we can share that customers across the world that use CBD have found it to be helpful in helping with stress, inflammation, chronic discomfort in muscles and joints, and many other challenges. These testimonials include both humans and pet owners.

The reality is that CBD is everywhere. It’s in beauty products to improve skincare and aid in acne, topical lotions to soothe sore muscles and joints, and many more. There are tinctures, softgels, gummies, powders, and the list goes on.

Tinctures vs Edibles

If you are trying to understand what the difference is between a CBD tincture and an edible CBD product, such as softgels or gummies, we can help.

Both tinctures and softgels and gummies are discreet methods for using CBD, unlike smoking or vaping (which we recommend against – bad for the lungs). Tinctures, softgels, and gummies have longer lasting, and consistently sustained effects.

So, what is right for you, a tincture, or an edible?

Both CBD tinctures and CBD softgels and gummies are a great entry point when trying CBD for those looking to experiment. Softgels and gummies, unlike tinctures, allow for a more controlled amount.

Considering CBD

One thing to consider when deciding between a CBD tincture and a CBD gummy is, “How quickly do you want it to work?”

  1. If you are looking for instant gratification, then the liquid form is the way to go. The sublingual method of ingestion of CBD tinctures does not require a metabolic breakdown (in your digestive tract), therefore the active CBD reaches its destination faster in the body. On average, it takes about 5 to 60 minutes from sublingual absorption in the mucous membrane under the tongue to onset with this method. This can vary based on your height and weight and your body’s sensitivity to CBD and its transportation system.
  2. With oral consumption, softgels and gummies first need to be broken down in the digestive system, then metabolized through the liver, and eventually work their way into the bloodstream to be circulated through your body. The average time from ingestion to onset may be about forty-five minutes to a few hours, depending on the efficiency of your digestive system and if you have an empty stomach when you take CBD in an edible form. Again, this too can vary based on height and weight.

CBD Delivery System

Then there is the matter of effectiveness via sublingual absorption (tinctures) vs going through your digestive system:

For greater effectiveness, the sublingual application is the way to go as one has much greater absorption into the body through your mouth lining than through your digestive system.

Favoring the use of edibles is the convenience factor. Both softgels and gummies are easier to take on the go, and consume discreetly, while tinctures require holding the CBD oil under your tongue for 60 seconds, as the longer one holds the CBD oil in one’s mouth, the more efficient will be its absorption into the body.

As well, the edible product should contain a consistent amount of CBD in every unit, unlike tinctures which need to be measured each time you take it.

Lastly, for those with a sweet tooth, they will like the taste and flavor of gummies. Ideally, the gummies you choose aren’t made with corn syrup and only contain natural flavors. Some say they prefer the taste of a gummy over a tincture but there are no advantages other than the time it takes. Softgels on the other hand are just swallowed and there is no taste.

CBD All in All

While both methods will get you the desired effect, we believe, hands down, the CBD tincture is a more efficient way to ingest CBD that is fast-acting, with slightly higher perceived absorption. At present, there are no independent studies we can find that support the efficiency of one method over the other, but we are sure that is coming soon.

The good thing about High Falls Hemp NY CBD tinctures, softgels, and gummies is that they are high potency and premium quality so you can’t go wrong. If you aren’t sure and want to try them both, we offer a CBD Mini Tincture perfect for sampling and a 4-pack of CBD gummies in two all-natural flavors to try.

All of our products are triple lab tested, have verified customer reviews, and are loved by thousands. You don’t have to take our word for it. Try them for yourself. We’re sure you will like them, and we offer a 30-day risk-free trial.
